DEVELOPING: A female student at a Connecticut high school was stabbed in the throat Friday morning by a fellow student because she refused to go to the prom with him, sources told The Connecticut Post.
Jonathan Law High School in Milford was put on lockdown and students were sent home after the 7:14 a.m. stabbing. A former faculty member from the school told FoxNews.com that the student suspect was arrested. The Post reported that the victim is at a nearby hospital and is in critical condition.
Police said that the attack was an isolated incident and that other students are safe. The school's prom is scheduled for tonight, the report said. Students identified the victim as Maren Sanchez, The Connecticut Post reported.
Twitter messages monitored by FoxNews.com indicated that the stabbing was over a prom-related issue, but police would not immediately confirm those reports.
Students at the school said that they were told initially to stay in their classrooms. The rumor had been that a fellow student was choked, The New Haven Register reported.
Carman declined to disclose other information, but police were expected to release more details later in the morning.
