Tornado warnings that were in effect for three counties in Missouri and one in northern Texas on Thursday have expired, but the National Weather Service says it's too soon for residents in the Midwest to let down their guard.

Tornado watches, which are less urgent than warnings, remain in effect for central and northeastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, much of western Arkansas and portions of southern Missouri, authorities said. There are a number of flash flood warnings in effect for central Missouri, stretching eastward to southern Indiana.

"It could be a very active evening," Bill Bunting, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told FoxNews.com. "Areas covered by tornado watches and folks in those areas should definitely pay attention to the weather and be prepared to move to shelter if a warning is issued for their area."

Tornado warnings were in effect for Franklin, Gasconade and Osage counties in Missouri, as well as Denton County in Texas. In University City, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis, 94 houses were damaged in heavy storms that rolled through the area earlier Thursday, Fox2Now.com reported. At least 700 were without power early Thursday evening.

Bunting said additional tornado watches "will undoubtedly be needed" farther east throughout Thursday night.

FoxNews.com's Karl de Vries contributed to this report.
