Authorities were searching Wednesday night for a suspect in a shooting at a Maryland high school that wounded two people.

The shooting at Frederick High School in Frederick, Md., took place shortly after 8 p.m. outside a gymnasium, Frederick Police Department Lt. Bruce DeGrange told FoxNews.com. Authorities had locked down the building and were conducting a search for a suspect, he added.

DeGrange did not have a description of the suspect, though he said authorities did not believe it was an active shooter situation.

He said two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries outside the gym, where a junior varsity basketball game was taking place. DeGrange did not have information on the victims' ages or whether they attended the school.

Michael Doerrer, a spokesman for Frederick County Public Schools, said the victims were of school age, but he did not know whether they were students at either the high school or a middle school that shares the same campus.

"Everybody in the building is safe, and ultimately that's our main concern," Doerrer said.

He added that plans had not yet been made on whether to close the high school on Thursday.

Officers took about 200 people who were at the game into the school cafeteria, secured the building and questioned the witnesses.

Frederick Capt. Richard Hetherington told The Associated Press the students were being released to parents at a nearby bowling alley.

The public school has 1,326 students.
