A New York commuter train struck a car on the tracks in a suburban New York City community, causing "multiple fatalities" Tuesday night, an official said.

Metropolitan Transit Authority spokesman Aaron Donovan told FoxNews.com that at least 12 people were also injured when a Metro-North train hit a car in Valhalla in Westchester County, about 32 miles north of New York City.

He said he did not know how many people were killed. The New York Post reported that at least seven died, while The Associated Press put the figure at 6, quoting railroad officials.

The train left Grand Central Station at 5:45 p.m. when it struck a car, which was on the tracks, the New York Post reported. The paper said the car and the front end of the train exploded almost immediately after impact.

The first three cars of the train were evacuated, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority sent buses to pick up commuters who were stranded, the Post added.

It was not immediately clear why the car was on the tracks.
