A man shot and killed himself Friday afternoon at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park outside a family-friendly ride, a sheriff’s official said.

The shooting occurred at 2:15 outside the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride and is considered a possible suicide, Nicole Nishida a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, told the Los Angeles Times.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Enrique Mandugan said homicide investigators were investigating the scene.

The man’s ex-girlfriend, who works at the park, notified security when she saw the man at the park, authorities said Friday night.

"We know he and his girlfriend have been estranged since February," sheriff's homicide Lt. Eddie Hernandez said. "She had a restraining order against him, and today she saw him outside the restaurant and she alerted security."

Hernandez said authorities tracked the man to an area near the ride. The man took out a gun from behind his back and shot himself after a deputy tried to persuade the man not to shoot himself, Hernandez said.

Authorities said park security searches the belongings of guests, but rarely use metal detector wands, which was how the man was able to get the gun inside the park.

A Universal Studios spokeswoman said the park is still open.

"We are working closely with law enforcement and corporate security on this ongoing investigation,'' the statement says. "The safety and security of our guests is always of the utmost importance.''

Universal Studios Hollywood prohibits guns from the park among other items, according to its website.
